The session will start with an overview of the ACE-V process, emphasizing the importance of objectivity. Following this will be an introduction to various tools, such as observation checklists and a discussion on the importance of separating observations from interpretations. Workshop 3

Workshop Title: Forensic Gait Analysis: Stage One Training

Presenters: Professor Ivan Birch and Nadia Asgeirsdottir

Abstract: Gait analysis is now a well established and widely used contributor to identification. Fundamental to its appropriate use as evidence is a thorough understanding of the human locomotor process and gait, the established processes, complexities and pitfalls of observational gait analysis, and the specific requirements of the criminal justice system when gait analysis is used as evidence. The workshop will provide participants with an understanding of how and why the gait cycle is divided by events into a series of phases, which provide the basic spatial and temporal landmarks for gait analysis, together with a detailed understanding of observational gait analysis and the process of identifying and describing features of gait from CCTV footage. Consideration will also be given to forensic gait analysis report writing, and the formulation of conclusions and confidence indicators. Attendees should have professional experience of gait analysis and/or comparative forensic work.
