Despite the regular consumption of single-use equipment in the field of Crime Scene Investigation, such as swabs, bags, tubes, and PPE, the generation of waste, and the overall sustainability of consumables, has never been investigated. This study aims to improve the sustainability of forensic consumables through a contextual inquiry approach, using survey and secondary data to identify the volume and scale of plastic waste. This, supported by focus groups and context-based interviews, will identify the common themes and catalysts for the lack of sustainability, and detect areas of friction in the forensic workflow. Initial outcomes reveal a broad and deep insight into waste generation within the forensic context. This is enabling the redesign of the evidence recovery process, utilising recyclable materials, packaging redesign, utilising recyclable materials, and using technology, to reduce the reliance on plastics, whilst mitigating DNA contamination risk.
